Toxic But Terrific Tour

Ashtabula, OH

Saturday, June 4, 2016
1-4 p.m.

Ashtabula County Water Watch (ACWW), an all-volunteer community group focused on water quality issues in Ashtabula County, has announced plans for a tour of Ashtabula County's sites of environmental interest and concern.

The Toxic but Terrific Tour highlights the county's long history with environmental issues including past and present super fund sites, injection wells, as well as the area's positive efforts towards environmental remediation.

ACWW invites members of the public to join them to learn about local environmental sites. The goal is to raise awareness in the community as well as inspire others to take action. Organizers are hoping that by learning about some of the environmental issues in Ashtabula, participants will start to think about ways to make it better.

The tour kicks off at 1 p.m. from the Harbor Topky Library in Ashtabula. It will start with an introduction and orientation to the event followed by a brief presentation by Vanessa Pesec with the Network for Oil and Gas Accountability and Protection. Ms. Pesec will give an overview of fracking activity in the area and provide information about the hazards of horizontal drilling and the impact of injection wells and drilling by-products.

Attendees will then be invited to get on board the bus for a tour of local sites of environmental interest. The tour is expected to take two hours and will include narration about each site along with relevant historical and environmental information.

Attendees are welcome to drive separately if needed and maps will be provided on the day of the event.

This event is free and open to the public. Funds for the tour were provided by a mini-grant from the Center for Health and Environmental Justice.
