Mixing and Using Herbal Tea

Granville, OH

The Going Green Store, 909 River Rd., Granville OH

Sunday, January 13, 2013 4 - 6pm

Nothing makes us feel cozy in winter like a steaming cup of herbal tea. We think of tea as a soothing treat, but it’s easy to overlook the many health benefits, from improving digestion, calming ragged nerves, and improving sleep, to adding key nutrients to our diet. Local herb farmer Janell Baran of Blue Owl Garden Emporium will introduce a variety of suitable tea herbs and spices -- many locally and sustainably grown right here in Licking County -- as well as the best brewing techniques.  Attendees will have an opportunity to experiment with their own herbal tea blends and sample a number of common and uncommon herbal flavor combinations.

Janell Baran is co-owner and operator of Blue Owl Garden Emporium herb farm and Blue Owl Hollow tree farm. After growing up on a small dairy farm in Minnesota, she had a 15+ year career in the computer industry; traveled, studied, and worked abroad all over the world; and earned a Master's in International Affairs before returning to farming in 2004. She now lives a busy, dirty, physically exhausting, but very satisfying life on an old mid-1800s farmstead nestled in the hills and hollows of Maryann township. She manages her 130-acre tree farm primarily for biodiversity/conservation and non-timber forest products, and conducts on-farm research involving native mushroom cultivation and the organic control of non-native invasive tree species. She also has a small herb farm that produces culinary and crafting herbs, edible flowers, heirloom fruits and vegetables for sale at local markets.
