As part of its 2013 Conservation Learning Series, the Licking County Soil and Water Conservation District will sponsor a Forestry Field Day at Blue Owl Hollow Tree Farm in northeast Licking County. Blue Owl Hollow is a 130-acre tree farm that produces log-grown gourmet mushrooms, native fruits, and a variety of woodland herbs for sale locally. Enrolled in the American Tree Farm System since 2005 and the recipient of a 2007 SARE Farmer/Rancher grant for research on organic controls for the invasive tree species Ailanthus, the farm has also participated in a variety of Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) forestry conservation programs including EQIP and CSP.

Morning sessions will focus on traditional woodland management including timber stand improvement, forest regeneration, riparian buffer zones, multi-story cropping and federal programs & assistance. Afternoon sessions will include sessions on low-impact/small-scale logging and sawmilling, organic control of invasive tree species, groundwater usage strategies, native medicinal herb cultivation, mushroom log inoculation and other sustainable forestry management practices.
