Statewide Soil Health Symposium

Sheds Light for Farmers on How to Make Healthy Soils Pay-off

Tuesday, March 26, 2019
8 a.m. to 4 p.m

Farmers, Certified Crop Advisors, conservation professionals and other members of the agriculture industry can gain insight into making soil health profitable during the Third Annual Ohio Soil Health Symposium.

The event will feature presentations by farmers, conservation folks, researchers and other agriculture industry experts. Discussion Rooms will provide space for small groups to discuss solutions "For Farmers", "For Advisors", and "From Industry" relating to herbicides, nutrient management, manure, on-farm research, small grains, planting equipment and weather events. Attendees can choose throughout the day which sessions will be most valuable.

The symposium will feature Special Guests, Sarah Carlson, Paul Hepperly and Dave Brandt.

- Sarah works for Practical Farmers of Iowa. She is an agronomist that focuses on transferring research about cover crops and small grains to the supply chain and farmers for more environmental and economic returns. She will be sharing on-farm research results from Iowa farms over the last 20 years. Sarah will also talk about the current questions that farmers in Iowa are trying to answer and economic bonuses that are being paid to farmers by the food supply chain.

- Dr. Paul Hepperly with the Rodale Institute has worked with farmers in the US, as well as Central and South America, the Caribbean, India and Africa. Paul will be discussing his Best Friend, the Earthworm and how it can help with fungal diseases and ecology, plant disease resistance and management, weed management, carbon sequestration and the bottom line of your farm costs.

- Dave Brandt is an Ohio farmer that has been using soil health practices on his farm since 1971. He is a great story-teller and will share his experiences of 'selling' his farm's healthy soil for lower input costs and higher profits. Dave will also lead a small group discussion room on cover crop blends for innovative farmers.

The symposium is being hosted by the Ashland, Holmes, Knox, Wayne and Seneca Soil & Water Conservation Districts and many supporting agricultural businesses. Additional sponsor space is still available at the event.

The registration cost for the symposium is $60 which includes a light breakfast, lunch, pie, ice cream and handouts.
