In the fall of 2021, a coalition of national organic organizations (OFA, NOC, IOIA, ACA, IFOAM-NA) hosted a webinar on the History of Racism in U.S. agriculture and organic. This presentation by Cambium Collective focused on how the early United States' history of slavery and genocide of indigenous peoples has and still impacts our food and agriculture system, including organic.
A recent survey of organic professionals showed that there was also a strong desire for a deeper look at the history of how US agricultural policies further deepened the disparity of farmers and landowners and a culture of racism in U.S. agriculture and organic in the past 100 years. How does our nation's agricultural policy perpetuate inequities in farmer representation?
This 90-minute webinar will present the history of racism in US agriculture and organic in the past 100 years, focusing on federal policies that discriminated against and excluded Black and brown farmers.
Presenter: Tiffany LaShae is a Farmer and Activist with a diverse background in organic agriculture and food justice. She is a farm educator, facilitating programs such as Soul Fire BIPOC Farming Immersions, Big River Beginning Farmers Education Program, and Farmer-to-Farmer Africa. Tiffany is also in a graduate program at the University of Minnesota. Her research is a mixed method, weaving soil health across the Black Belt region and the cultural anthropology of Black farmers.
