Lake Effect Chapter: Food and Energy Workshops

Painesville, Ohio

Sunday, April 30, 2023
Noon-3:30 p.m.

Want to be more self-sufficient? Get hands-on experience in these workshops on food storage and renewable energy at the Lake County Fairgrounds' new Youth and Community Center. Workshops will happen one at a time, so attendees are welcome to come only for those they are interested in joining.

Prior to the workshops, participants can enjoy a delicious organic vegan wrap, as well as organic cookies and a beverage. Lunches available while they last; a donation is requested. (Noon)

OEFFA Presentation: We'll kick things off with OEFFA showing how organic is all around you and how important it is for your health and planet! (12:20-12:40 p.m.)

Homesteading 101: Tips, tools, and references for starting your permaculture inspired homestead. We'll cover orchards, gardens, livestock, earthworks, and more, plus where to put things on your land and how to start building your dreams based on northeast Ohio resources. Presented by John from Red Beet Row in Jefferson. A donation to OEFFA is requested. (12:40-1:30 p.m.)

Solar Energy Applications for Home, Farm, and Business: We'll explore the prevailing need and potential to become energy independent using solar panels and electric vehicles. Hands-on instruction using solar panel kits will help you learn enough to make your own simple solar devices, plus supply the knowledge to consider and intelligently discuss a full home scale or business renewable energy system. Presented by Tom and Valerie from A's and O's Farm in Mentor. A donation to OEFFA is requested. (1:40-2:30 p.m.)

Fermentation and the Preservation of Local Food: Fermentation is an age-old food preservation technique that transforms ingredients into something new and exciting. Learn the simple steps that can turn cabbage into sauerkraut or kimchi and hot peppers into chili sauce. Food and jars provided. Space is limited. $10 registration is required. Registration closes on Thursday, April 27. If space fills, workshop spectators are welcome. Presented by Steve from Bat Barn Farm in Chardon. (2:40-3:30 p.m.)
